Cloake has created an immersive and gripping world with an action and court intrigue themed story that doesn't let you go once you start reading it. Love, loss, coping with grief and guilt, and the hopes and sorrows of war all balance perfectly in this master storyteller's work.
This is a very dark fantasy, and while it reads as a YA in many ways, it may have themes worth screening for readers on the younger end of the YA genre. It is very reminiscent of a cleaner Game of Thrones meets Return of the King.
This gripping fantasy read is a tale that I highly recommend for any Dark Epic Fantasy lover, and I will look forward to volume 3 with great interest.
